What Green Product Attracts Lookie Loos But Not Buyers?
>> Sunday, February 13, 2011
Since launching in 2008, Ecobunga! has listed thousands of sales and coupons for lots of different types of planet-friendly products: natural cleaners, organic food, organic cotton clothing for kids and adults, toxic-free skin care, and much more.
From our traffic and affiliate sales data, we've noticed that there is one type of product that consistently gets plenty of clicks and lots of "likes" on our Facebook Page, but virtually no sales. And that product is ...?
Solar gadgets.
Those kind of solar gadgets.
Now, it could be the make-up of our audience. Ecobunga! fans are almost all women. Perhaps women think the gadgets are cool (prompting the "looks" and the "likes"), but just not quite cool enough to plunk down some cash. Or, perhaps it's not a he/she thing at all. Maybe, regardless of gender, people applaud the idea of solar gadgets, but don't want to experience the perceived inconvenience of actually using one or don't believe they really work. And don't forget the big kahuna of all selling objections: price. Solar Messenger bags usually hover around $150 - $200. Ouch.
There are plenty of companies making solar gadgets and plenty of retailers selling them. So, it looks like someone out there is buying them. But the big disparity among our Ecobunga! fans between their interest in solar gadgets and their willingness to buy one makes us think that there is a prime opportunity, whether it's on the product development side or the marketing side, to switch lookie loos into buyers.

I think you're right about the audience and what they are buying. Women seem to really like the whimsical solar garden statues, but the price tag on those tend to be higher too.
